American Heart Association CPR/AED Training

 

The Cattaraugus County Office of Emergency Services is an authorized Training Center for the American Heart Association (AHA). We offer several different AHA courses that will meet the first aid and CPR training needs for you or your organization. Our AHA Certified Instructors can instruct these courses on location at your agency, facility, organization, or business. In addition we offer the classroom/skills portion for the E-Learning courses offered by the American Heart Association.  Please see below for additional information on “In the Classroom” and the "E-Learning" courses.


  “In the Classroom” AHA CPR Courses

*All students are required to be in possession of the current AHA textbook that is appropriate for the in classroom course they are attending. Textbooks can be purchased from AHA vendors. (see the bottom of this page for a listing of vendors), Books are not available from the Cattaraugus County Office of Emergency Services.*

  Basic Life Support

This class includes a video lecture and hands on skills.  It covers core material such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign body airway obstruction, and AED use. Successful completion of written and skills tests will result in a certification card that is good for 2 years.

  • Approximate Course Length: Approximately 4.5 Hours
  • Target Audience – Health Care Professionals and other personnel who need to know CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in and out of hospital settings. Including, but not limited to EMS professionals, Firefighters, nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals.
  • Minimum Number of Students for course to be offered: 5
  • Required Textbook for in classroom Course: AHA Item # 15-1010 or 15-3102 (e-book)
  • Course Cost per Student: $40 (textbook NOT included)

  Heartsaver CPR/AED 

This class includes a video lecture and hands on skills. The course teaches adult CPR, AED and choking relief.  Optional modules can that can be instructed include child CPR and AED use, and Infant CPR, including child and infant choking. The optional modules allow for a course to be taught to fit your needs. Successful completion of a skills test will result in a certification card that is good for 2 years. There is not a mandatory written examination.

  • Approximate Course Length: Approximately 3 Hours
  • Target Audience: Anyone who is not a health care provider and would like to learn basic CPR & AED training, receive a certification card and/or is a requirement for their employment to be CPR certified.
  • Minimum Number of Students for course to be offered: 5
  • Required  Textbook for in classroom Course: AHA Item# 15-1020 or 15-3116 (e-book)
  • Course Cost per student: $30 (textbook NOT included)

  Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, & AED  

This class includes a video lecture and hands on skills. The course teaches basic first aid for a variety medical emergencies and adult CPR, AED, and choking relief. Optional modules that can be instructed include child CPR, and AED use, and infant CPR including child and infant choking. The optional modules allow for a course to be taught to fit your needs. Successful completion of a skills test in first aid and CPR will result in a certification card that is good for 2 years. There is not a mandatory written examination.

  • Approximate Course Length: Approximately 4-5 Hours
  • Target Audience: Anyone who is not a health care provider and would like to learn basic first aid, CPR, and AED use and receive a certification card.
  • Minimum Number of Students for the course to be offered: 5
  • Required  Textbook for in classroom Course: AHA Item# 15-1018 or 15-3117 (e-book)
  • Course Cost per student: $40 (textbook NOT included)

“E-Learning” AHA CPR Courses

Need CPR training and there are no courses scheduled that meet your needs? 

American Heart Association E–Learning/Blended learning is a solution. Students participating in E-learning complete an online porition, then attend a structured hands on session with an AHA Instructor. Successful completion of the On-line portion and the Hands on portion result in a certification appropriate for the course completed (including a certification card).

Online Porition of the Course is purchased and completed online by the participant at a time convenient for them. The course is a self-paced web based course that uses a variety of eLearning assests such as dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities to teach students the approriate knowledge and skills. 

Hands on Porition of the Course - After successful completion of the online porition, students will attend a hands on session with a certified AHA Instructor. The session will focus on meaningful skills practice, debriefing, team scenarios, discussion of local protocols and skills testing.  The hands on portion, based on the student’s level of comfort, will take about 60-90 minutes to complete.

  HeartSaver CPR AED Online Part 1 – Item # 15-1401

The Heartsaver CPR AED Online Part 1 program has been updated to reflect new science in the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

This Web-based, self-directed program uses interactive lessons and videos to teach students CPR, AED and choking knowledge.

Target Audience is anyone who is not a health care provider and would like to learn basic CPR & AED training, receive a certification card and/or is a requirement for their employment to be CPR/AED certified.

Content includes:

· Adult CPR and AED use
· Adult choking
· Child CPR and AED use (optional)
· Infant CPR (optional)
· Child choking (optional)
· Infant choking (optional)

  HeartSaver FirstAid CPR AED Online Part 1 – Item# 15-1403

The Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Online Part 1 program has been updated to reflect new science in the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care,
including the 2015 Guidelines for First Aid.

This Web-based, self-directed program uses interactive lessons and videos to teach students first aid, CPR and AED use.

This Web-based, self-directed program uses case-based scenarios and interactive lessons to teach students firstaid knowledge.

Target Audience is anyone who is not a health care provider and would like to learn basic First aid , receive a certification card and/or is a requirement for their employment to be First aid certified.

**Students are strongly recommended to complete the HeartSaver Firstaid/CPR/AED Training instead of just the First Aid Training**

Content includes:

· First aid basics
· Medical emergencies (includes adult choking)
· Injury emergencies
· Environmental emergencies

 Heartcode BLS online (the eLearning equivlent to the classroom BLS course) Item # 15-1400

Heartcode BLS online as been updated to reflect new science in the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

This web-based, self-directed course uses case-based scenarios and interactive lessons to teach students about both single-rescuer and team basic life support. Content taught includes promptly recognizing several life-threatening emergencies, providing high-quality chest compressions, delivering appropriate ventilations and providing early use of an AED. This course may be used for initial or renewal BLS course completion.

Target Audience - Health Care Professionals and other personnel who need to know or recertify in CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in and out of hospital settings. Including, but not limited to EMS professionals, Firefighters, nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals.

 

Process to complete the E-Learning AHA CPR Certification:

1. Purchase the online portion that you wish to complete.  Information about each of the available course can be found above. If you are unsure which course you should complete, please contact EMS Coordinator Robert Kuhn at 716-938-2244 or RFKuhn [at] cattco [dot] org.

Upon purchase you will receive an email with an accesses key and directions how to log in and complete the course.

The online courses can be purchased through AHA Vendors. (See the bottom of the page for a listing of AHA Vendors) The easiest way to find the correct course is to search the vendor’s website using the item numbers. (Item numbers for each course can be found above next to the course name) Prices for the online poritions are established by the vendors and the American Heart Association and vary based on the course you select.

2. Schedule Hands on session - After successful completion of the online portion, contact the Cattaraugus County Office of Emergency Services at 716-938-2244 to schedule your hands on session.  Instructors are available most week days from 9am-3pm at the Office of Emergency Services, 303 Court Street Little Valley, NY. If this time frame does not work for you, other times may be available. Based on the students level of comfort, the hands on porition will take about a total of 1- 2 hours to complete. 

The fee for the hands on session is set by the Office of Emergency Services and covers the skills practice, testing, and a certification card that is good for 2 years. The fees are as follows:

  • If online porition is scheduled & completed during the week from 9am – 3pm - $20.00 per student.
  • If online porition & completed during a time other than above - $40.00 per student.  

3. Attend your hands on session to completethe course and achieve certification - Bring your certificate of completion of the online portion to your scheduled skills session along with your payment for the hands on session ($20 or $40 as described above). Payment can be made in the form of cash, check or money order payable to Cattaraugus County. 

Upon sucessful completion of the online porition and the hands on session you will receive your certification card in the mail within 10 business days from the completion of the hands on session. 

YOU MUST CALL AND SCHEDULE A DATE AND TIME FOR YOUR SKILLS SESSIONS. WALK IN STUDENTS WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT WILL NOT BE TESTED.
