By Thomas Livak, Director

As Director of a small department with an appreciable number of projects, I take a very “hands on” role in the management of the Department, special project leadership, problem solving and resource allocation. Below are some of the major initiatives that I had the opportunity to be closely involved with during 2003, in addition to typical discipline oversight and administrative duties.

· Business Retention & Expansion
· Microenterprise Development Program & Loan Fund
· Enchanted Mountains Marketing Initiative
· Logo Development and Trademark
· Grant & Contract Administration
· I-86 Information Center Planning
· Downtown Revitalization Technical Assistance
· West Valley Facility Reuse Planning
· Snowmobile Trail Grant Program
· Housing Rehab Grant Administration
· Empire Zone Expansion
· Website Upgrade and Enhancement

Snowmobiling in the Enchanted Mountains
of Cattaraugus County

Snowmobiling continued to grow in 2003 along with the economic benefits that accompany this winter activity. The vast network of trails in the County brings additional customers to many of our small businesses around the County.

The Department works closely with the federation of snowmobile clubs in a number of different capacities including: NYS Trail Grant Writing, Mapping, Tourism Promotion and State Environmental Quality Review Procedures.

NYS provided $90,705.00 in trail grant funding to Cattaraugus County for the 2002-2003 season. That funding was distributed to each club according to the miles of trails that each club maintains.

The snowmobile trail network connects outward with neighboring counties encouraging “Snowmobile Touring” which is becoming a significant part of our winter tourism economy.
