Fri, 09/17/2010 - 7:00am - 11:00am

On Friday, September 17, 2010 from11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Brown Farm – Dan and Marcy Brown, 5346 Snow Brook Road, Great Valley, NY (Cattaraugus County) there will be discussions on organic nutrition,  a presentation on crop insurance and other discussions.

Dan restarted milking on the family farm in 1998 as a pasture herd. In February 2010, the farm became certified organic shipping to Horizon Dairy. Currently, the Browns milk about 45 cows and are improving the pasture with an EQIP grant for water, laneways, and fencing. There will be many interesting things to look at and talk about at this farm.

We will start the day at 11:00 AM with a “Round Table” discussion on organic nutrition led by Jeff Mattocks, nutritionist for the Fertrell Company. Fertrell is the oldest producer (since 1946) of organic fertilizers in the United States. They also make a wide variety of earth-friendly products, from livestock supplements to natural pesticides.

Following the Round Table, A. Fay Benson, Small Dairy Support Specialist, Cornell University SCNY Regional Team will have a short presentation on the Risk Management Agency (RMA) - Pasture, Rangeland, Forage – Rainfall Index Crop Insurance.

The RMA product "Pasture Hayland” Rainfall Index is not the typical insurance product and is being piloted in the Southern Tier of NY for the second year. Fay Benson will review what producers need to know in order to decide if buying insurance is right for them. Policies need to be completed with a crop insurance agent. Once the policy is set, and the rainfall is below the index established by your policy, computers mail a check. No claims adjuster or claims have to be filed. With RMA supporting 51% to 59% of the costs for the pilot program, it may be a good time to try it on some of your acreage.

Our group will view and discuss the following:

► Fencing, laneway, and water development under an EQIP Grant

► Planting and grazing brassicas as a season extender

► Other topics the group may wish to discuss

This pasture walk is sponsored by The Fertrell Company, Don Wild – King’s AgriSeeds, Horizon Dairy, and Cornell Cooperative Extension.
