LABORER II VACANCIES: Applications are accepted on a continuous basis for both part-time, temporary and full-time positions. SALARY: $12.91 per hour (full-time) - 2007 rate FINAL FILING DATE: Continuous Recruitment EXAMINATION DATE: No examination required for Laborer II FEE REQUIRED: No fee required for Laborer RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: None DUTIES: This work involves a wide group of positions involved with the performance of a wide variety of routine manual tasks in a variety of work settings. This class differs from that of Laborer (Public Works) by virtue of the fact that an incumbent periodically must operate over-the-road automotive equipment with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) in excess of 26,000 pounds. Duties are performed under direct or general supervision depending on the nature of the tasks to be completed. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: - Loads and unloads materials, parts, or products onto or from pallets, carts, or trucks manually or using a hoist; - Transports containers of refuse and disposes in refuse boxes or incinerators; - Performs a variety of heavy cleaning work such as washing walls and windows; - Acts as a helper to skilled or semiskilled workers; - Shovels snow from sidewalks, stairs, and other passages; - Rakes, tamps, and shovels asphalt; - Excavates and fills trenches; - Charges mixing machines with cement, sand, and stone; - Salts and sands streets and roads; - Helps rebuild road shoulders and install drain pipe; - Cuts brush and grass using hand tools or mower; - Participates in the installation of guard rails, traffic signs, and markings; - Acts as a flag man directing traffic; - Paints equipment and buildings; - On occasion, may operate truck or other motorized equipment utilized in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, and other public work activities; - May operate a snow plow, clearing and sanding roads FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of general safe driving practices necessary in the operation of motorized equipment; working knowledge of the principles and operator of vehicle air brake systems; knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions associated with road and building maintenance and material handling; skill in the operation of trucks and other motorized equipment; ability to follow directions; good powers of observation; ability to use hand and power tools; mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, willingness to work outdoors year round; possession of a good driving record; ability to maintain alertness and composure during snow removal activities; ability to use hand and power tools; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work in a safe and efficient manner; physical condition sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by New York State with endorsements appropriate for the type of vehicle operate. APPLICATIONS: You
