Features of the Class: The work involves performing repairs requiring a high level of skill to diesel and gasoline powered automotive equipment such as bulldozers, loaders, and heavy trucks. In addition, the incumbent may operate a truck, clearing and sanding roads, when assigned to do so. This class differs from Automotive Mechanic by virtue of required knowledge of and skill in maintaining fuel injection and supercharging systems common to diesel power plants, as well as responsibility for driving trucks. Incumbents also repair vehicle drive trains and chassis. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be done, permitting a considerable leeway in planning the details of each assignment. A Diesel Mechanic/Driver does related work as required.
Qualifications: Two years mechanical experience, which shall have involved the repair and overhaul of automotive diesel engines.
NOTE: Successful completion of a certified training course in diesel engine repair offered by a New York State approved technical training institute may be substituted for one year of experience described above.
In agencies where required, possession and maintenance of commercial driver license.
In agencies where required, possession and maintenance of New York State Department of Motor Vehicles inspector’s certification as issued by the appropriate New York State authorities.
