Bicycles, Bicycle Tours and the Rt. 16 Corridor

Logo for the Route 16 Corridor Community PartnershipHave you noticed the flower decorated bicycles along the Rt. 16 corridor? They are placed in Rt. 16 communities in Cattaraugus County from the Twin Lakes Home Sales in the Town of Yorkshire to the Chuckwagon Restaurant in the Town of Olean. These bicycles with baskets filled with flowers include a sign that invites you to Explore Rt. 16. This is a Rt. 16 Corridor Community Partnership(R16CCP) project intended to bring attention to the corridor and R16CCP. This multi-jurisdictional business/community partnership focuses on utilizing the assets of the Rt. 16 corridor communities to attract tourists and to improve the economic climate on this route.

The Explore Rt. 16Bike & Flower Project bicycles will be in place through September and were created with many volunteer hours and donations from Rt. 16 residents and businesses. Flower donations were received from Pleasant Valley Greenhouse and Nursery in Olean and Will’s Greenhouse in Machias. Signs were produced by Hoffy’s in Delevan and the Root 16 Garden Club in Machias assisted with flower arranging. The bicycles were donated by individuals and the Portville Transfer Station.

R16CCP is also organizing the Sweet 16 Bicycle Tour on August 15th with support from Cattaraugus County’s Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism and the Hinsdale American Legion and the Hinsdale Fire Department providing a starting point and the post-tour activities. There will be three different bicycle tours that start and end at the Hinsdale American Legion field. A 30-mile tour will use Franklinville as a turnaround point and a 60 mile route will turn around in Delevan. Both of these tours offer miles of great Enchanted Mountains scenery riding past bison and elk, lakes, creeks and streams and magnificent hilltop views. A shorter, flat terrain tour will weave through the Hinsdale area. The registration brochure containing complete information is available at this link.

The Sweet 16 Bicycle Tour will utilize Rt. 16 businesses for the T-shirts design and production, provision of the beef and bison dinner items and food donations for the riders along the route. It will also support Rt. 16 food pantries through donation of non-perishable food items. The riders will begin at 8:30 AM with post-ride activities at the Hinsdale American Legion field featuring a dinner with a selection of beef or bison, corn on the cob, salt potatoes, dessert and beverage. Come and enjoy the ride, the post-ride food, music and fun.
