Assistance Available at Old Fire Hall in Gowanda

OLD FIRE HALL (MUNICIPAL BUILDING), BOARD ROOM, MAIN ST., GOWANDA, NY

FOOD

Canned goods, shelf stable meals, food vouchers, and fresh produce

WATER

Bottled water and canned water.

PETS

Food for pets, shelter information, and information for dealing with pets in a disaster.

CLEANING SUPPLIES

Bleach, face masks, clean up kits and other cleaning materials.

SERVICES

Applications for cash assistance, food stamps, hot water tanks, furnaces and other white goods. Requests for volunteer assistance with clean up and debris removal also accepted here.

HEALTH

Information on contamination health risks (i.e. water, black mold, sewage, dust, mosquitoes, etc. and tetanus shots).

INSURANCE INFORMATION

The New York State Insurance Department will have their mobile Command Center on site from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until further notice to assist residents with insurance questions and issues. Their toll free number is 1-800-339-1759.

On August 28, 2009, the NY State Insurance Mobile Support is no longer in Gowanda and has moved to Silver Creek. If you need insurance help and support please call the NYS Insurance Department's Disaster Hotline 1-800-339-1759 from 9AM-5PMor visit www.ins.state.ny.us

Homeowners' policies do not usually cover damage from floods, but such coverage is available through the National Flood Insurance Program. Owners of damaged vehicles whose automobile insurance policies contain comprehensive coverage, also known as "other than collision," are covered for flood damages.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES AND NEEDS

TRASH/DEBRIS DISPOSAL:

STORM-DAMAGED GOODS – These may be disposed of for free during regular hours at transfer stations from August 21 through September 4, 2009. See attached transfer station locations and hours.

COMPOSTABLE ITEMS – Tree branches, brush, leaves, wood, etc. can be taken to either Five Points or Farwell, or Thatcher Brook. Their information is also included on the attached list.

MUD CLEAN UP/REMOVAL – Beginning, August 27, Mud can be dropped off at the Palmer Street disposal. (Old Reservoir Site)

HAZARDOUS WASTE – Collection Station at Cattaraugus County DPW on Jack Ellis Drive in Little Valley is scheduled for October 3, 2009. You must register first by calling 716-938-2486 by no later than September 24, 2009.

REGULAR/SMALL TRASH – Two pickups will be conducted, one on 8/25 and one on 8/28. This will be the final pick up by the Village of Gowanda before normal service is resumed.

FEMA:

Governor Patterson has requested the President to authorize a Federal Disaster Declaration for Cattaraugus County. No contact numbers or procedures have been identified as of this notice.
