Cattaraugus County Hosts Continuing Education Program
Licensed land surveyors receive required training
LITTLE VALLEY, NEW YORK (October 2, 2012) – Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works (DPW) recently hosted a continuing education webinar for licensed land surveyors in the Allegany Plateau Chapter of the New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors. This webinar, entitled “Ethics and Professional Courtesy,” is a required course for license renewal. Bill Kankolenski, DPW Surveyor and Vice President of the Allegany Chapter, coordinated this one-day training for all association members.
A land surveyor uses techniques, equipment, and science of accurately determining the three-dimensional position of points and the distances and angles between them. These points are then used to establish land maps and boundaries for ownership or governmental purposes.
“Participants learned by doing,” said Kankolenski. “The instructor gave participants different situations that are common to the survey practice that involved professional ethics.” After working through each scenario, the instructor led participants in a cooperative discussion regarding each solution, and its impact on protecting the public from fraudulent surveys and business practices. “All participants felt the course was very informative, and provided best practices that can be used in the field.”
