Cattaraugus County Meals on Wheels Program Recognized Nationally
The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging was recently recognized at the national level for their successful efforts in the “Share Your Love” campaign sponsored by Subaru and the Meals on Wheels Association of America. In a recent press release by the Meals on Wheels Association of America, five programs from across the nation were commended for their success, including San Diego, CA; Cleveland, OH; Olathe, KS; Bellingham, WA; and Olean, NY.
As part of this national campaign, for every Subaru sold, a portion of the proceeds goes to support Meals on Wheels programs. Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging was initially thought to be unable to participate due to the lack of a local dealership. Staff at the agency basically said, “No dealership? No problem!” The agency received recognition for reaching out to a dealership 50 miles away and promoting the cause in their local Santa Claus Lane parade. Because of their relentless promotion despite the lack of a local partnership, the agency received a monetary reward and special recognition for their efforts to end senior hunger.
The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging plans to continue the campaign through several activities and media efforts. “We were able to promote an important cause and have a lot of fun at the same time,” stated Cathy Mackay, Director. The department plans to participate again in this year’s Santa Claus Lane parade. Lisa Swaciak, Home Delivered Meal Coordinator, has also encouraged any available Meals on Wheels volunteers to assist with or march in the parade. “We’ve been working on this year’s theme and costuming. I just can’t believe we were recognized nationally for our efforts. We owe any success to our group of dedicated, amazing Meals on Wheels volunteers,” Mrs. Swaciak added. The Department of Aging hopes to make participating in the parade an annual tradition.
