Take Care in Cold Weather

News from Social Services, Posted on Wed, 02/05/2014 - 11:52am

The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services reminds area residents to take extra precautions while battling the cold this winter.

Make sure space heaters used around the house are approved for indoor use.  Take time to ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are in proper working order.

Avoid sleeping with your infant. Doing so has been shown to increase the risk of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, as adults can roll over onto sleeping babies or cause them to be trapped in bedding.

Parents should also avoid placing babies in cribs containing toys, pillows or comforters.  Bundling babies too much can also place them at risk.  It is recommended that room temperatures in homes with babies not be set higher than 70 degrees.

Applying for HEAP, the Home Energy Assistance Program, can also assist residents with funding for heating costs.

For more information on safe sleeping for infants or to find out more about the Home Energy Assistance Program, contact the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services at 701-3571 or 701-3477.
