20th Annual Public Hearing and Senior Forum

Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, has announced that the agency’s Twentieth (20th) Annual Senior Forum and Public Hearing will be held Thursday, August 21, 2014, at the Ellicottville Elementary School beginning at 9:00 a.m. The forum is open to all persons age 60 and older who are residents of Cattaraugus County.

The day’s events include the Annual Public Hearing, which will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., a series of workshops during two time periods, lunch prepared by the department’s Senior Nutrition Program, and afternoon entertainment.   

Following the public hearing, participants will be provided with the opportunity to choose from the following workshops:

  • “Arm Knitting,” presented by Ruth Vincent;
  • “Red Cross Disaster Preparedness,” presented by Rosanna Bonfilio and Marion Boyce;
  • “The 123’s and ABC’s of Reading Your Prescription,” presented by Sue Brisky;
  • “Mapping the Civil War,” presented by Earl McElfresh;
  • “Living with Diabetes,” presented by Candy Work, R.D.;
  • “Polish Celebrations,” presented by Marion Pockalny.

Time will be allotted before lunch for participants to take advantage of various health screenings and to visit informational displays. Department of Aging staff will also be on hand to take ID photos and answer questions. 


Reservations for lunch must be made by August 15, 2014, at any Senior Wellness and Nutrition program dining site or by calling the Department of the Aging office in Olean at 373-8032 or 1-800-462-2901. This year’s luncheon menu includes polish sausage, lazy pierogi, carrots, fruit, and cheesecake for dessert. The suggested donation for the lunch is $4.00. No one will be denied a meal because of inability or unwillingness to pay.  There is no pre-registration required and there is no charge for the workshops.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Betty Perkins-Carpenter will be featured as the afternoon keynote speaker. She will be giving a presentation entitled, “A Unique and Fun Approach to Preventing Falls.” There will also be door prizes drawn at the end of the day for which you must be present to win.
