The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services assisted 192 Cattaraugus County residents with special medical needs during the hot months this year through the Home Energy Assistance Program’s Cooling Component.

The HEAP Cooling Program provides for the purchase and installation of air conditioners and fans to low income households that include a member with a medical condition that is intensified by the warm weather. This program began on May 1st, 2015, and ran through August 31st

Applicants were required to meet the HEAP income guidelines for the 2014-15 program year, and reside in a HEAP eligible living situation in Cattaraugus County. A statement from a medical provider was also required.

“We did not expect the program to run as long as it did”, noted Chief Examiner Wendy Green. “In the past, the program has exhausted its funds before the end of August but this year we served almost double the amount of applicants from last year”, Green added.
