On Saturday, May 19 1934, workers using a power scraper to dig a new pond at the State Fish Hatchery just outside of Randolph unearthed remains of what was determined to be a Colombian mammoth; the first discovery of it's kind in our region. After a few days of public viewing on site at the fish hatchery, the skull and tusks were sent to Albany to be treated and preserved and later placed on display at the State Museum. The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services and the New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance would like our community to know that free summer meals are now available for children 18(21 with disabilities) and under at sites across the county.
Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging/NY Connects, has announced that Cattaraugus County has been awarded 760 Senior Farmers Market coupon booklets, valued at $15,200. Each booklet contains five $4.00 coupons ($20.00 value), and can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating Farmers Markets in Cattaraugus County.
There will be a rabies clinic held at the Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works garage in Markhams on September 1st, Franklinville on September 6th, and Allegany on September 8th. This rabies clinics will be open from 4:30 pm to 7:30pm.
Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism is in preparations for the 9th Annual OnoFest being held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Onoville Marina, 8 miles south of Exit 17 off I-86 on West Perimeter Road, Steamburg, NY.
OnoFest is a one day event that will start at 12:00 pm and run to 9:30 p.m. It is a family-oriented event scheduled to have arts; crafts; food; games and contests for the young and old alike; bands throughout the day with a grand finale of fireworks at dusk!
The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Library is pleased to announce the opening of it's new exhibit: "The National Pastime: Baseball in Cattaraugus County Museum." This centerpiece of this exhibit is the museum's Ed Tanner collection, focusing on the stellar career of the Franklinville Frankees standout. In addition we have uniforms, photos, and memorabilia of teams from across Cattaraugus County. If you are interested in baseball or local history, please come check it out!
