Free Summer Meals for Children

The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services and the New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance would like our community to know that free summer meals are now available for children 18 and under at sites across the county.

The Summer Food Service Program provides free, nutritious meals and activities to keep kids healthy and active this summer.

2015 Senior Farmers Market Coupon Distribution Schedule

Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging/NY Connects, has announced that Cattaraugus County has been awarded 800 Senior Farmers Market coupon booklets, valued at $16,000. Each booklet contains five $4.00 coupons ($20.00 value), and can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating Farmers Markets in Cattaraugus County.

Robocall SCAM Targets Older New Yorkers

The New York State Office for Aging has been made aware of a new robocall scam that attempts to lure older New Yorkers into providing their personal information over the phone. The voice on the robocall identifies itself as the New York State Office for the Aging and asks the individual answering the phone to  press a button if someone in the home is over 65 and would be interested in receiving a free Medic Alert pin and $3000 in coupons for food or other items.  
 

Free Diabetes Prevention Program

The Cattaraugus County Department of Aging/NY Connects will be offering a Diabetes Prevention Program, FREE, for anyone 18 years of age or older who is at risk for developing diabetes or has been diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

June 15 was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

Social Services' May 2015 Employment Report: 19 people employed
