Twenty-three people, who were receiving welfare benefits are now employed, reports Cattaraugus County’s Department of Social Services.
Social Services staff report that in November, 23 county residents received training, work experience and a chance to get high school equivalency diplomas when necessary. The 23 Social Services clients were assisted by department staff in order to help them enter the workforce to reduce or eliminate their need for public assistance.
Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, has announced plans for the Senior Wellness and Nutrition program holiday meals in December. Mrs. Mackay declared, “Dining with friends at a nutrition site is more fun than riding in Santa’s sleigh on Christmas night!”
The Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism is in the process of collecting information on all operating agriculture businesses in the County. The County wishes to better promote the County’s agricultural businesses and products by developing a County Agriculture Trail.
The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging’s Senior Wellness and Nutrition program needs your help. We are currently looking for volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels in the Randolph area. The meals are picked up at the Randolph nutrition site which is open Monday through Friday. Most volunteers deliver 7 to 12 meals once a week and it takes about one hour (10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.) to complete a delivery route. There is also a need for volunteers to assist at the congregate site by setting tables, assisting in food prep, and cleaning up after lunch.
As we approach the holiday season, there is much to prepare for - readying the house for guests, decorating, traveling, baking, cooking, shopping and wrapping gifts. For the estimated 65 million caregivers, these yearly tasks may seem impossible. Their days are already filled with managing their own lives, plus the life of the person they are caring for. Add to this the stress of the holidays, and some caregivers may find themselves at their breaking point.

Families enjoying the 1 p.m. Nov. 30 St. Bonaventure Lady Bonnies basketball game vs. Binghamton with their children will also be able to learn how to help other youth in our community.
Cattaraugus County’s Department of Social Services has teamed up with the Lady Bonnies to showcase, not only the team, but the department’s foster care program during National Adoption Month.
The Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau is in search of candidates to serve as part-time and full-time AmeriCorps Members (http://www.NationalService.gov) at Pioneer Central, Allegany-Limestone, Belfast Central, Genesee Valley Central, Catt. County Youth Bureau, Catt./Allegany County 4-H, and the Child Advocacy Center.
Candidates should have a counseling or education background or be interested in working with youth.
On November 19, 2014, the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services will join social services districts and agencies across the country in celebrating National Adoption Month by hosting a reception for 4 Cattaraugus County children who will join forever families through adoption. A special ceremony will be held in the morning at Cattaraugus County Family Court to complete the adoptions
