Notice of Annual 30-Day Period to Request Inclusion of Agricultural Land within an existing Agricultural District

Agriculture and Markets Law Section 303-b was enacted in 2003 to provide for the designation of an annual 30-day period during which landowners may submit requests for the inclusion of predominately viable agricultural land into an existing certified agricultural district. Cattaraugus County has designated January 2 through January 31, 2014 as this 30-day period. Landowners seeking inclusion into a certified agricultural district must submit a “Landowner Request for Inclusion” form to the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism by the January 31st deadline.

Aging's Evidence-based Intervention Plans are working

The Cattaraugus County Department of Aging has a news article about using six distinct evidence-based programs in its work with older adults and their families.

"I really believe in these [EBI programs]. We have seen them drastically change a person's life for the better," said County Office for the Aging Director Catherine Mackay.

County Department of the Aging case manager, Ellen Herner, is lead case manager for a number of the county's EBI programs, and uses four model programs in her practice, said Mackay.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff Alerts Public To Phone Scam

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a phone scam that is generating in the Cattaraugus County Area.  Residents (primarily targeting grandmothers) are receiving phone calls from jails/police agency informing the elderly they have a loved one who needs money wired to release them from jail/custody.  Residents may be asked for personal information to include personal identification, debit and credit card information, social security numbers, address information and more.

Unique to this scam it is mainly targeting grandmothers and requesting they wire money.  Residents are reminded to never give out any personal information over the telephone.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office Earns State Re-Accreditation

There has been much discussion recently regarding the building in Little Valley that once housed the County Museum.

Let me review some of the available information regarding this building.

The original “seed” funds for this building was about $500 left over from the Cattaraugus County Centennial of 1908.

Santa Sheriff's Program Tenth Year of Giving Continues!

Jolly Old St. Nick recently made a call to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office Program Director Deputy Brian Keis to get an update and progress on the 2013 giving season.  He was pleased to hear that fundraising efforts are in full swing and donations are still coming in.  Deputy Keis continues to send out letters to county businesses to help raise more funds as the program is approximately $1,000.00 lower than it had hoped to be by this time.

Two high-wheeled bicycles displayed at the Cattaraugus County Museum

A new exhibit has opened at the Cattaraugus County Museum!  It is called "An Olio", meaning a miscellaneous mixture or collection, because it features a number of widely varied items.

Many of these items, though very interesting, are one-of-a-kind and rarely fit into larger exhibits. Because of this, we have decided to create an exhibit solely dedicated to these unusual items!
