Western New York Regional Sustainability Plan; Cleaner Greener Communities; Open

LANCASTER, N.Y., July 9, 2012 – A coalition of Western New York municipalities and organizations in Erie, Niagara, Allegany, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties has received funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to create a regional sustainability plan as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Cleaner, Greener Communities Program. The Western New York Regional Sustainability Planning process is underway and community input is needed to help shape our region’s economic and environmental future.

State-wide Burn Ban in Effect

As of July 13, 2012, a State-wide burn ban is in effect for all of New York through October 10th.  The ban includes all regulations of the annual, Spring Burn Ban which can be found in it's entirety by clicking the link below.

Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development is in preparations for the 5th Annual OnoFest being held August 11, 2012 at the Onoville Marina, 8 miles south of Exit 17 off I 86 on West Perimeter Road, Steamburg, NY.

OnoFest is a one day event that will start at Noon and run to 9:00 p.m. It is a family oriented event scheduled to have arts; crafts; food; games and contests for the young and old alike; bands throughout the day with a grand finale of fireworks at dusk! Special activities are being planned for the children in the family. There is no rain date for this event, it will be held rain or shine.

Bats can be found in areas throughout the state. You may think you see birds around dusk but it’s more likely that they are bats searching for bugs to eat, especially if your home is near a water source. Keeping bats out of your home is a good first step to protect yourself against rabies. “Most bats are healthy and contribute to our environment in many ways, particularly by controlling insects. However, on average, 1% of bats are infected with rabies.

2012 Fall Rabies Clinics

There will be rabies clinics held at Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works garages in early September.  All three rabies clinics will be open from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
