Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office Host to Volunteer Fire Police School

Sheriff Whitcomb proudly announces 63 local fire department members completed a Fire Police Training School over the weekend. The training was hosted by the Sheriff’s Office and instructed by Lt. David Schuman and Training Coordinator, Christa Heckathorn. During the 21 hour course, participants received instruction covering the Fire Service, Legal Issues for Fire Police, Vehicle and Traffic Laws, Personal Protective Equipment, Flagger Training, and Safety/Traffic Management.

The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) announced the 2013 Outstanding Volunteer Community Contribution Award winners before 300 people at the 41st Annual RSVP Recognition Reception held at the Great Valley Volunteer Fireman’s Clubhouse on May 21 and 22, 2014. This year the RSVP Committee selected volunteers Lois McLaughlin and Marney Ferguson as honorees. 

Cattaraugus County to offer Website Classes

Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development will be offering a free website course to small businesses and non-profit organizations. The course will consist of three classes that will be held on June 12th, June 19th and June 26th of 2014. The classes will run from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm and will be held in the training center located at the Little Valley County Center.

Many areas of Cattaraugus County sustained significant damage from the flooding last week; and some continue to receive new damage even today.  The Office of Emergency Services is working to compile damage information from all municipalities, businesses, and home owners.  If your property has sustained damage related to the flooding, here is a short list of what to do to report these damages.

  • Take pictures of everything – before you begin to cleanup or make repairs, during clean up and repair, and after

A car seat check and installation will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Allegany Fire Hall, 186 W. Main Street,Allegany,New York.

New seats will be available for a $20.00 donation.

After the Flood: Tips and Resources

Your home or business has been flooded. Although floodwaters may be down in some areas, many dangers still exist. Here are some things to remember in the days ahead:

  • Avoid moving water.
  • Do not attempt rescue in damaged areas unless your assistance has been specifically requested by police, fire, or other emergency services.
  • Emergency workers will be assisting people in flooded areas.

  • Route 242 from Little Valley to Coldspring
  • Route 353 north of the Village of Cattaraugus
  • Route 62 Dayton

Culverts and roadways are overflowing and flooding.
