Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, has announced that Cattaraugus County has been awarded 660 Senior Farmers Market coupon booklets, valued at $13,200. Each booklet contains five $4.00 coupons ($20.00 value), and can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating Farmers' Markets in Cattaraugus County.
The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging’s Senior Wellness and Nutrition program needs your help. We are currently looking for Meals on Wheels volunteers to deliver meals in the city of Olean. The Olean nutrition site is open Monday through Friday. Most volunteers deliver approximately 12 meals once a week, and it takes an hour or less to complete a route. Mileage reimbursement is available to volunteers age 55 and over.
The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) announced the 2013 Outstanding Volunteer Community Contribution Award winners before 300 people at the 41st Annual RSVP Recognition Reception held at the Great Valley Volunteer Fireman’s Clubhouse on May 21 and 22, 2014. This year the RSVP Committee selected volunteers Lois McLaughlin and Marney Ferguson as honorees.
The quarterly birthday event on May 2, 2014 at the Little Valley Senior Wellness & Nutrition Sites will celebrate the birthdays of people born during the months of April, May, and June. The Cattaraugus County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has nominated two volunteers, Mary Martello and Betty Jean Greene, for the 2014 New York State Senior Citizen’s Award entitled, “Unleash the Power of Age.” This award is to recognize older New Yorkers who have demonstrated the power of making a difference through civic engagement. Each county has the opportunity to nominate two volunteers for this prestigious award.
A bold new dining trend is being unleashed in communities all across the U.S. “Let’s Have Dinner and Talk About Death” (LHD) launched in August 2013, and since that time health care professionals have been chomping at the bit to host their own macabre meals. Here in Cattaraugus County, the first such event is about to take place.
Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, announced today that as part of the 2014 March for Meals campaign, the department’s Senior Wellness and Nutrition (SWAN) program hosted Community Champions Day on Wednesday, March 19, at the nutrition sites located throughout Cattaraugus County. Formerly known as Mayors for Meals Day, Community Champions Day is a day when elected officials deliver Meals on Wheels along with the volunteers.
