It has been said there are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.

A caregiver can be defined as a person who assists another with any of the following: bathing, housekeeping, grocery shopping, bill paying, organizing medications, providing transportation, providing day-to-day company, and/or giving any other assistance the care recipient may need. Read more

Warning for Older Adults of Phone Scam about Medical Alert Devices

The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging has recently logged a number of tips from older adults who have stated that they received calls regarding medical alert devices. The senior citizens indicate that initially the call appears to be a human being, but it is actually a computerized calling system that has a way of responding to key words. The caller states that a medical alert device will be provided at no cost to the senior.

During the holiday season, many individuals experience increased stress and feelings of isolation. This is especially true for older adults who are struggling to remain independent and in their own homes. Many caregivers and children come home to visit for the holidays and worry about leaving their elderly parents without any assistance in the home. Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging wants to remind individuals and their caregivers that there are a number of programs to help alleviate these concerns.

Aging's Evidence-based Intervention Plans are working

The Cattaraugus County Department of Aging has a news article about using six distinct evidence-based programs in its work with older adults and their families.

"I really believe in these [EBI programs]. We have seen them drastically change a person's life for the better," said County Office for the Aging Director Catherine Mackay.

County Department of the Aging case manager, Ellen Herner, is lead case manager for a number of the county's EBI programs, and uses four model programs in her practice, said Mackay.

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) 2013-2014 Season Opens November 18, 2013

The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging will be assisting individuals age 60 and over with HEAP applications. Senior citizens in Cattaraugus County that received a regular HEAP benefit last HEAP season will receive an application by mail this year.

Maximum income eligibility guidelines are $2,175 per month for a household of one, and $2,844 for a two-person household. Higher income limits exist for larger households.

Cattaraugus County Saves Residents More than $200,000 with ProAct Prescription Discount Card

The ProAct Prescription Discount Card Program is designed to provide individuals with little or no prescription coverage access to affordable medications. Since Cattaraugus County implemented the discount card back in May of 2012, residents have collectively filled more than 3,700 prescriptions and saved more than $200,000.

Quarterly Birthday and Halloween Party

Trick or treat? A Halloween party and a birthday party on the same day…definitely a treat!

Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, has announced plans for the upcoming quarterly birthday party to be held at the senior wellness and nutrition (SWAN) sites. The birthday party will be held in conjunction with Halloween, and seniors are encouraged to dress up in their favorite costume. The parties will be held on Thursday, October 31, and will celebrate the birthdays of people born during the months of October, November and December. Mrs. Mackay said, “This is a great time for people to get together and celebrate one another’s birthdays. If you have never had the opportunity to visit the nutrition site and it is your birthday, we would like to invite you to attend this celebration.”

Annual Senior Forum and Public Hearing

The Nineteenth (19th) Annual Senior Forum and Public Hearing will be held Thursday, August 15, 2013, at the Ellicottville Elementary School beginning at 9:00 a.m. The forum is open to all persons age 60 and older who are residents of Cattaraugus County.

The day’s events include the Annual Public Hearing, which will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., a series of workshops during two time periods, lunch prepared by the department’s Senior Nutrition Program, and afternoon entertainment. Read more
