The Jury Commissioner's Office operates within Cattaraugus County but comes under the auspices of the State of New York Judicial System. Supreme Court

Supreme Court has unlimited jurisdiction and generally hears civil cases beyond the monetary limits of the lower court, such as malpractice and negligence actions. Divorce, separation and annulment proceedings are also handled in Supreme Court.

County Court handles criminal prosecutions of felony offenses committed within the County. County Court also has limited jurisdiction in civil cases, generally involving amounts up to $25,000. Read more

Family Court

The Family Court office is staffed by the Chief Clerk, Deputy Chief Clerk, clerical staff of six, court reporter, and a part-time Hearing Examiner. The Chambers staffs include two multi-hat Judges, two private secretaries, and two Law Clerks. A Judicial Hearing Officer has also been assigned to this County to assist with the ever-increasing caseload.

The Family Court administrative offices are located in Olean, with the majority of cases being heard in the Olean courtrooms. Read more

The New York State trial courts for Cattaraugus County include Supreme Court, County Court, Family Court and Surrogate Court. There are two multi-bench county court judges who preside in County, Family and Surrogate Court and are assigned as acting supreme court justices.

The judges are required to be proficient in various areas of legal practice and procedure since they hear cases in all four courts. The judges are elected to ten-year terms.  The Cattaraugus County Court facilities are located in Little Valley and Olean. Read more
