Cattaraugus County Health Department, announced the following updates regarding Swine FLU (H1N1):

Suspected case of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection is a person with fever and cold-like symptoms with onset within 7 days of close contact with a person who is a confirmed case of swine influenza A (H1N1), or within 7 days of travel to a community either within the U.S. or internationally where there are one or more cases, or resides in a community where there are one or more confirmed cases
Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties’ Health Departments are working together to educate their county residents about swine flu. The New York State Department of Health has set up a 24 hour a day/ 7 days a week toll free hotline to answer questions from the public. This number is 1-800-808-1987.
The Cattaraugus County Health Department’s Medical Director, Gilbert Witte, MD announced that there has been an infant death in the western part of Cattaraugus County from Haemophilus Influenzae Type b (Hib) meningitis. The infant had not received any immunizations. Hib is a serious disease that can affect many organ systems. The most common types of invasive disease are meningitis, epiglottitis (severe swelling in the throat), pneumonia and cellulitis.
There have been 5 confirmed cases of Pertussis and 3 probable cases since the beginning of the school year. Pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial disease involving the respiratory tract. Whooping cough can occur at any age. It is recommended that children receive a basic series of DTaP at 2 months of age and subsequent doses given at 4.6.
This work involves assisting in the care of residents and their quarters in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Residential Health Care facility where employed.
