Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning & Tourism announces new web page for featuring downloads for GPS units.

In today's world of electronic gadgets and gizmos, the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, has established a web page to assist guests and residents while touring the County. A lot of people are hitting the road with their GPS as the means to travel on a trip. People are also interested in having the most up-to-date lists of points of interest (POIs.) Depending on when you updated the maps on your GPS, the points of interest could be quite old.

The Department is using GIS to convert points of interest (POIs) for use with most GPS units. POIs provide a handy way of organizing groups of points, and can also include more information on a point. Visitors and residents can now download free files from the web site onto their computers and with the free software available from most GPS manufacturers install the POIs onto their GPS. Most businesses listed display the business or location name, address and phone number. Some files include what the business sells. A guest will simply decide where he or she would like to visit, press GO and the GPS will provide turn by turn directions. We have tried to include all tourism related businesses located in Cattaraugus County. If you know of a business that is not included, please contact us and we will update the files.

The snowmobile crossings and snowmobile business file includes a proximity alarm. While driving on a major highway as you are approaching a snowmobile crossing, most GPS will provide a visual and audio alert to warn you of the crossing. This will make the snowmobile trails safer for both snowmobile riders and cars on the road. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Cattaraugus County Federation of Snowmobilers and Cattaraugus County are constantly looking for ways to make the trails safer. This could be a key component. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and Cattaraugus County have teamed to develop a state-wide major road snowmobile crossing file which could be used through-out New York State.

Other examples of data available: The fishing location file includes the name of the lake or stream, type of fish, dates of the season and the town in which it is located. The Allegany State Park file has stores, scenic overlooks, attractions, picnic sites and much more. The Bed & Breakfast, Hotel/Motel and Restaurant files include phone numbers which will allow a guest to phone for more information.

The following files are now available for FREE downloading onto your GPS: Agri - Tourism Businesses, Allegany State Park, Amish Shops, Antiques Stores, Bed & Breakfasts, Equestrian Businesses, Fishing Locations, Food & Gas for Snowmobiling, Gift Shops, Golf Courses, Hotels/Motels, Hunting Access, Major Attractions, Major Road Snowmobile Crossings, Miniature Golf, Nature Centers, Outdoor Sport Shops, Raceways, things to do on a Rainy Day, Ranches, Restaurants and Snowmobile Crossings.
