April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

By the Chairman of the Cattaraugus County Legislature

WHEREAS, April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and as such, the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services has joined counties across the state and the nation to help draw attention to this critical issue that impacts over 156,000 families and every community in New York State, and

WHEREAS, in 2016, the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services Child Protective Services Unit investigated over 1700 alleged cases of child abuse and neglect and partnered with various County departments, courts, law enforcement agencies and service providers to assist families whose children were at risk of foster care placement or who were placed in foster care due to immediate safety concerns, and

WHEREAS, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the annual financial impact of child abuse and maltreatment in the United States is over $124 billion in foster care, medical and mental health services, special education, and criminal justice services, and

WHEREAS, just one confirmed victim of abuse costs an average of over $212,000 over that person's lifetime, and

WHEREAS, to celebrate the National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services wore blue on April 5, 2017 to raise awareness of the vital need for collaboration to prevent child abuse,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Paula J. Stockman, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Chairman of the Cattaraugus County Legislature, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2017 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the County of Cattaraugus.
