The Department of Public Works is looking for a Senior Civil Engineer. This is a Provisional Appointment; permanent appointment requires successful completion, and placement, through the Civil Service examination process.

This work involves performing civil engineering studies necessary for the development, upkeep, and improvement of County infrastructure. Responsibilities may include design, development and implementation of projects involving bridge and road construction, waste management, and traffic engineering. Supervision is exercised over subordinate engineering department personnel. This position differs from that of a Civil Engineer by virtue of expanded scope and level of responsibility. Work is performed under general direction of the Director of Engineering with wide latitude allowed for use of independent judgment in carrying out technical aspects of the work. A Senior Civil Engineer does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university with baccalaureate degree in engineering; four years’ practical engineering experience; and possession of a license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as a professional engineer.

NOTE: In lieu of the degree and experience requirements, twelve years of practical experience in work satisfactory to the State board of engineering and land surveying may be accepted, provided that each full year of college study in engineering satisfactory to the education department may at the discretion of the board be accepted in lieu of two years of the required twelve years of experience. Education above the baccalaureate level may also be applied in lieu of the four years of post-baccalaureate engineering experience in the discretion of the board.
