Aging Out Loud with Mecanna Metzler
May is Older Americans Month. Throughout the month, the Cattaraugus County Dept. of the Aging has been identifying older adults within the community that are living life to the fullest and "AGING OUT LOUD". Hundreds of seniors attended this month's RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) gala and spent two days being recognized for all the amazing contributions they make to our county. This week, Department of Aging staff caught up with 101 year old Mecanna Metzler.
This was no easy task, as Mecanna is always on the move! As a resident of Salamanca, she is very involved in her local community. Mecanna spends time with her bowling league, her quilting group, and working on making baby hats and blankets for donation. She heard about a local Tai Chi class that had just ended and reached out to us to see if another class would be starting soon. When she heard it could be a few months or longer, Mecanna took action. She has been busy lining up class members and then went about securing a facility to house another class as soon as possible.
The Department of Aging staff members couldn't help but move their timeline up to fit into Mecanna's schedule. After all, as Mecanna so sweetly reminded us, she needs to start her Tai Chi so that she can get in shape for bowling season! We want to take this opportunity for thanking Mecanna for reminding us that life doesn't end after 60...or 85...or 100! She is a true example of one of this nation's older adults that is "Aging Out Loud" and serving as an inspiration to people of all ages.
