First Equine Advisory Committee Informational Meeting

Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism has scheduled an open and informational Equine Advisory Committee meeting on January 16, 2018 at 6:30 pm.  The committee’s mission is to encourage and promote all equestrian types and disciplines in the Enchanted Mountain region. The goals / purpose of this committee are to:

  1. Prepare a comprehensive equestrian development plan for future equestrian economic growth in Cattaraugus County.
  2. Grow equestrian stake-holders capital, and equine related businesses by: offering business outreach, technical assistance, Business planning, and revolving loan funds.
  3. Promote all equestrian types and disciplines to surrounding areas by offering quality facilities and quality experiences.
  4. Support efforts for riding trails, indoor and outdoor arenas, and mixed use trails.
  5. Promote equestrian advocacy issues including liability, economic impact, education, and outreach.

“Growing the equestrian economy is very important to Cattaraugus County,” said Crystal Abers, Director of Economic Development Planning and Tourism.  “Throughout the past few years, we have brought together horse and business owners and riders to organize and work together to market and coordinate activities in Cattaraugus.  In 2018 we hope to build on what we have accomplished and make the Equine Economy bigger and better in Cattaraugus County.”

There has been a great deal of progress in the equine economy. In 2005 The Growing the Equestrian Economy in Cattaraugus County, New York guidebook was prepared in collaboration by The Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, and consultants, Richard T. Swist, Principal of Swist Government Consulting Associates and Jo-Anne Young, Director of Houghton College Equestrian Studies Program. The ultimate goal of this market assessment and guidebook was to provide the equestrian and business communities in Cattaraugus County with a strategic plan to market the county’s equestrian assets and businesses.  Two of the recommendations for the county were to have all of the equestrian trails connect and to have a main event center with an indoor arena to host larger, more profitable events.

Throughout the past few years, the main focus of the committee has been on the trail system. The Cattaraugus County Trails System Advisory Committee was established and work began on the countywide trails system plan. With representation from DEC and ASP the committee works to create a complete system of trails within the county, as well as connecting to trails North, South, East and West.

It is time to set our focus on the other recommendation, a first class show facility. Cattaraugus County has a wealth of knowledgeable equestrians that have experience in the horse show industry both locally, nationally and even some internationally.  By combining our local horsemen with a clear strategic plan, a first class facility is not out of reach.
