Cattaraugus County residents can be assured they can continue to apply for SNAP benefits at the county's Department of Social Services for now, despite the federal government shutdown.

Department of Social Services Commissioner Anthony Turano said the county will continue to take applications for the program in person, by mail, and online using myBenefits.ny.gov., despite the shutdown, until given direction by federal and/or state authorities not to process the forms. 

Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office K9 Nichols will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Nichols's vest is sponsored by a fundraiser hosted by Cattaraugus Little Valley School District and will be embroidered with the sentiment "Gifted by Cattaraugus Little Valley School District". Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.

The New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance has announced that components of the 2018-19 Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) have been extended through Friday, April 26, 2019.

The program was scheduled to close on Friday, March 15, 2019.

Under the directive from the state, the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services will continue to accept applications post-marked or submitted electronically at mybenefits.ny.gov, until the close of business on Friday, April 26, 2019.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to its residents about scam artists reportedly calling from Social Security Administration requesting individuals to press number 1 for further communications asking for personal information.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office encourages individuals to never give out their personal information. Social Security Administration confirms that they do not call individuals everything is done through their office by mail. If such a call is received, residents are encouraged to call their local police agency.
